Entering Mechanical Watches: Movements, Rate Tolerance, Power Reserve and Service Cycle
From automatic and manual movements, the COSC daily-rate standard, to the 3 to 5 year oil service, the starter facts for new watch buyers.
The mechanical watch is the most complex piece in a man's jewellery box and the most misunderstood. Some think a Swiss watch is accurate; some wear it two months unworn and think it broke when it stops. The charm is exactly that it is not quartz-precise but has error, needs care, is a living mechanical art. This article covers automatic versus manual, the legal rate standard, power-reserve logic and oil-service cycle, with 2026 prices, to set right expectations for beginners.
By energy source, mechanical splits automatic and manual. Below from movement to care, so the beginner avoids pits. First kill a fixation: a mechanical watch's value is not accuracy but the mechanism itself. For zero error, that is quartz or smart.
Automatic and Manual Movements
An automatic winds by the wrist swinging a rotor; daily activity sustains it, and it stops after about 40 to 72 hours, power reserve, at rest, not a fault. A manual needs regular crown winding, reserve often 40 to 90 hours. After an automatic stops, wind the crown 20 to 30 turns by hand then wear to revive.
Movement grade reads decoration, Geneva and perlage stripes, jewel count, commonly 21 to 28 jewels, jewels are bearing reducers, beat rate, 21,600 or 28,800 per hour, higher is steadier. Complications like perpetual calendar and tourbillon raise price and service difficulty. The movement is the heart; see type then decoration.
- Automatic winds by rotor; resting 40 to 72 hours then stops is normal
- Manual needs regular crown winding
- Power reserve 40 to 90 hours
- 28,800 beat rate is steadier
The Legal Rate Standard
Mechanical error is seconds fast or slow per day. China's standard, QB/T 1249, sets top-grade automatic at minus 10 to plus 25 seconds, first grade minus 20 to plus 50, qualified minus 40 to plus 75. Swiss COSC requires minus 4 to plus 6 seconds per day, averaged over several positions. Top houses hold tighter, say minus 2 to plus 2.
So a mechanical watch off by a minute or two a month is fully normal; for zero error buy quartz or smart. Ask the daily range and demand the test card. Error is not a defect, it is the mechanical's nature. Take the daily rate as character not fault and you relax.
Power Reserve and Wear
Power reserve is the run time after a full wind. Most automatics 40 to 72 hours; long-reserve, 7-day, 8-day, use multiple barrels, dearer but easier. If you skip wearing Saturday, Monday may find it stopped; that is physics, not quality.
Fix: wind fully before removing Friday, or use a watch winder, quiet, adjustable turn and speed; a bad one harms the movement with constant one-way force. A long-parked watch should be hand-wound every 1 to 2 months against dry oil. Stopping is not scary; dry oil is.
Water Resistance and Daily Don'ts
The crown marks 30, 50, 100, 200 m water resistance, but the m is a static test, not a dive depth. 30 m only splashes, hand wash; 50 m shower not swim; 100 m swim; 200 m plus dive. Any resistant watch fears hot water, sauna, steam, heat expands the gasket and it leaks, the top source of water complaints.
An unscrewed crown, screw-down, must never meet water. Leather straps fear water and sweat, harden and smell; nylon and rubber take heat and water but age. Check the gasket yearly; replace about 50 to 150 RMB. The resistance number is a lab figure, not a life guarantee; hot water is the switch that undoes it.
Service Cycle and Oil
The core service is oiling, disassemble, clean sludge, re-lubricate, usually every 3 to 5 years, or earlier if it runs visibly slow or winding feels gritty. Official service by brand: entry mechanical oiling 500 to 1,500 RMB, about 70 to 210 dollars; luxury 2,000 to 6,000 RMB, roughly 280 to 840 dollars; top complications over 10,000.
Past due, dry oil wears gears and repair far exceeds service. Warranty is usually 2 years, self-paid after. Put oiling on the phone calendar; it is the cheapest watch habit. Delayed service saves money that becomes repair cost. The mechanical ages; service is its check-up.
Case Material and Weight
Cases commonly 316L steel, hard, approachable, 904L, Rolex-only, more corrosion-proof, titanium, light, allergy-safe but scratch-prone, ceramic, hard not scratched but brittle against drop, 18K gold, dear but soft and scratch-prone. Material sets weight and durability; titanium halves weight, ceramic never scratches but breaks on floor.
Daily commute takes steel most sensibly; sensitive skin takes titanium; want feel takes gold but accept scratches. The crystal is mostly sapphire, Mohs 9, very scratch-proof but fears hard corner hits; a few use acrylic, scratches but polishable. Material is the base of wear feel; weight affects all-day comfort.
Price Bands and Entry
2026 context: domestic or entry mechanical, Seagull, Fiyta, 1,000 to 5,000 RMB, about 140 to 700 dollars; Japanese mechanical, Seiko, Citizen mechanical lines, 2,000 to 10,000 RMB, roughly 280 to 1,410 dollars; Swiss entry, Tissot, Mido, 3,000 to 15,000 RMB, some 420 to 2,110 dollars; luxury, Omega, Rolex, 30,000 to 300,000 plus RMB, about 4,230 to 42,250 plus dollars; independent complications no ceiling. The span is huge; beginners get lost.
Beginners should practise in the 3,000 to 15,000 RMB band, confirm daily rate, water resistance and service cost before upgrading. Used watches: watch the warranty card and whether opened for repair; opened loses value. The mechanical is a long relationship; do not upgrade before knowing the service fee. Buy right first, then buy dear.
Strap upkeep: leather lives 1 to 2 years, hardens and cracks with sweat, replace original 500 to 3,000 RMB; metal can be linked and adjusted, polish later 100 to 300. Ask the strap replacement price at buy; a luxury original strap can be a tenth of the watch price. The strap is a hidden long-term cost.
Magnetism and demagnetising: a watch near phone, speaker, magnetic-clasp bag runs fast; a demagnetiser fixes in seconds. Do not rest the watch on a speaker or use a magnetic mount. Magnetism is the commonest non-fault fast cause; demagnetise before suspecting the movement.
New or used: used luxury is often 60 to 80 percent of list, skipping the new-car tax-like premium, but check the card, open history, warranty. Beginners practise new then enter used. Either way keep the card and receipt for low resale discount.
Function choice: daily commute takes a simple three-hand, complications look good but are hard to set and dear to keep. First mechanical, do not chase complication; learn rate and care first. More functions, more fault points; beginners steadiness first.
Rate expectation: even COSC allows plus or minus 6 seconds a day, a yearly drift of maybe two minutes, fully normal. Do not send for repair on slight change; demagnetise then reset. Take the mechanical as a characterful partner not a timer and the complaints fade.
The beauty of a mechanical watch is that it allows error yet asks you to understand it.
Practical checklist
- Automatic resting 40 to 72 hours then stopping is normal; hand-wind 20 to 30 turns first
- Within plus or minus 30 seconds a day is healthy; for zero error take quartz
- 50 m resists shower not swim; ban hot water and sauna
- Oil every 3 to 5 years; past due wears gears and costs more
- Beginners practise 3,000 to 15,000 RMB; ask daily rate and service cost
A mechanical watch is not a dearer quartz but a living system to be understood. Accept daily drift within plus or minus 30 seconds, know an automatic stopping after a few days at rest is power spent not damage, remember the water resistance m is static and hot water sauna are banned, and put the 3 to 5 year oiling on the calendar. Beginners practise in the 3,000 to 15,000 RMB band most steadily, checking daily rate, water grade and later service cost, not led by the logo. Last line: half a mechanical's value is in its timekeeping, half in the care you give; who understands wears ten years still precise, who ignores enters repair in three. Before buying, ask whether you will be the one to wind regularly and oil on time. The mechanical's romance is two-way; it returns what you put in.
